Badagry Heritage: Ancient Slave Trade Sites Undergo Major Renovation Ahead of UNESCO World Heritage Bid

In a historic move to preserve the memory of one of Nigeria’s most significant historical landmarks, the Badagry Heritage Museum and the Gberefu Island Slave Port (also known as the “Point of No Return”) are undergoing a comprehensive renovation. The project, backed by the Lagos State Government and international cultural preservation bodies, aims to position the sites for UNESCO World Heritage status.

The renovation includes upgraded walkways, improved museum exhibits with digital storytelling elements, and better visitor facilities. “Badagry holds the memory of millions of our ancestors who passed through these waters. This renovation ensures their story is told with the dignity and accuracy it deserves,” said a spokesperson for the Badagry Heritage Preservation Committee.

Tourism officials expect the revamp to double visitor traffic to the historic sites within the next year. The project is scheduled for completion in time for the 2025 International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery.
